How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs get more info perfectly when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
