How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they have different functions however the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. 3. Fuel Pump
